Hello, I'll be finishing a TEFL course soon here in Canada and will be applying for a job in Japan, but which company/school?

I've heard good things about ECC, and bad things about NOVA. There's always two sides to a story, and I guess I just want to hear as many viewpoints as possible before going further.

Thanks in advance for some information.

Sandy.

for NOVA, it depends entirely on the branch that you get placed in, and who your AT (assistant trainer) is. The smaller branches tend to be a lot better than the bigger ones, because it creates a closer knit group of friends. However, the actual infrastructure of NOVA as a company is quite terrible, because it is a company about sales, and not about teaching. The actual teaching part at the school is what you make of it. If you treat as something you want to be good at, it is very rewarding, but my advice is to not treat it as a "backpacker's job." Personally, I like the actual teaching at NOVA, but have second thoughts about how the company is actually run. I will be with NOVA for about a total of 6 months probably, but will find other work.

You'll hear all sorts of 'good, bad and ugly' stories about just about every school/company imaginable if you ask around for long enough.

I recommend that you go in with an open mind and make your best decision according to your wants/needs. You can always make changes later if you like, just like many people here in Japan are doing.
