121sensei.com is for the use of all language teachers in Japan. We can help teachers to get private students. No matter what language you speak or teach or where you live, all teachers in Japan are welcome to use this free Japan-wide service.

Why private lessons? - Teachers view
Private teaching in Japan has numerous benefits for the teacher. It gives us multiple choices: Where we teach: How we teach: What times we teach: How much we get paid: What teaching materials we use: How little or much we want to work: How we dress, etc.

Why private lessons? - Students view
Students attending the large chain schools in Japan pay hefty prices for the courses. Fees vary depending on which 'package’ they buy, add in the joining fee and it all gets a bit expensive for some students. Enter the private language teacher! Students choose their teacher: Students pay their teacher on a per-lesson basis: Students get personalized lessons: It's flexible and better!

The lessons - First contact
Once a student has chosen a teacher we will notify the teacher of their selection. We then forward the teachers contact information to the student (teachers email and phone details only). Students can then contact teachers directly to arrange a meeting. Initial contact is usually by email from students. When students call it's good to speak s-l-o-w-l-y and keep it simple. Repeat and have the student repeat details about meeting time and place.

Lesson venue
Teachers choose the place, eg: Home: Cafe: Classroom: Your decision! Initial meetings between the teacher and student may be more comfortable in a neutral setting, your local McDonald's will do. If you teach students in your apartment it's a good idea to have it on the neat side of the scale.

Lesson venues part two!
Don't limit yourself to your immediate neighborhood for teaching areas. Check out some other nearby places or even market your teaching services in the area you work in if different to where you live. Divide and conquer!

Teaching materials
Use teaching materials that you are comfortable with. Textbooks get a little pricey so photocopy a few of your teaching colleagues or friends books. Check the classifieds as you will occasionally find people giving teaching text books away. Scheduling and cancellations
When organizing lesson dates and times get your student to repeat the details to you, just so you don't forget! Seriously though, no one wants a no-show. In the event of cancellations try to give as much notice as possible. Students will be advised of the same.

Students pay you
Students pay teachers cash on a lesson-to-lesson basis. If you've never been paid this way before you may feel a little awkward at first. For some reason getting it in an envelope feels better. Students know teachers lesson fees from their online profile but it's still a good idea to slip it into the conversation on your first meeting with all students so there's no confusion.
