How does this work? It's free for anyone teaching in Japan to register and use. Your teaching profile is created by completing our registration form that includes info about your teaching experience, schedule of availability, qualifications, lesson fees, and locations for teaching Japan wide.
Teacher details (except contact info and surname), appear on our site for students to browse. Students choose teachers based on location in Japan, teaching experience etc, and get their contact details from us. Students then contact teachers directly by email or phone to arrange private lessons. We don't charge teachers and don't dictate lesson fees. Students pay 121sensei.com a fee for teachers contact info.
Who pays me? Students pay teachers cash on a lesson-to-lesson basis. Students know teachers lesson fees from their profile. Your lesson fees are entirely yours, and you determine them yourself. We receive nothing fron teachers. Note: On average, teachers are charging ¥3500 for private teaching in Japan (60 mins).
Where do I teach? You may want to teach at home, in a cafe, or hold lessons in your classroom. It's for you to decide the teaching venue. However, for initial meetings neutral venues are often more comfortable for both teacher and student. You may multi-list areas for teaching in Japan.
How do I get students? When your profile is up and running on our site and students have checked out your details, they will in turn get you. Students browse teacher profiles and choose depending on how detailed and informative the info is. So, if interested in private teaching in Japan via this service, complete your registration form as fully as possible.
How do students contact me? Students contact teachers by email or phone. Communicating on the phone can be a daunting task for students, so please speak clearly and slowly and confirm any meeting arrangements during the course of a phone call. Also note that an unrecognizable number appearing on your phone could be a student trying to contact you. Teachers that have been selected by a student will be contacted by us by email notifying of their selection, and should be prepared for a call. A cell phone email address is ideal if you don't have easy or regular access to a personal computer. Either way, please use an email address that you check regularly.
How long do I have to wait? If you are located in a city in Japan, then you have a better chance of getting private students than your twin living in the countryside! Other factors may include teaching competition in your area, your lesson fees, etc. We recommend that you send a picture for your profile (JPG file type), and multi-list areas available for teaching in Japan, teaching near home and work perhaps.
Can you give me a teaching job? 121sensei.com cannot give you a teaching job. We do give teachers a place to freely advertise themselves for private teaching in Japan. Please consider any private lessons as a result of this service as freelance. Note: Schools looking for teachers in Japan may use this service also, so a profile online may assist an employer with a position for someone teaching in Japan.
Can I register from outside Japan? Please don't register from outside Japan, as obviously you need to be in Japan to offer your teaching services. When you arrive, register to get private students in Japan, teaching English or any language in all areas of Japan - teaching to suit your schedule.
My profile isn't online anymore, why? As students are paying for teachers contact details, it is expected that teachers be contactable. In the event of a teacher not responding to a students attempts at contacting them, or not replying to email or phone contact from a student or 121sensei.com, it will be considered that the teachers circumstances have changed and that they no longer need their profile online.
How do I change my details? From the login button found at the top left of all teacher pages of the site. When your registration is received and accepted, you will be sent a teacher ID number. Your ID number and the email address that you signed up with are all that you need to login to our editing area.
I want to remove my profile, how can I? If you are leaving Japan on vacation or just want to take your profile offline for a period of time, you can simply login and deactivate your profile in our editing area. If you want to permanently delete your profile, provision is provided on your update page.
I don't speak Japanese, can I register? Yes you can. Many teachers in Japan don't speak Japanese. Many schools strongly advise against teachers using Japanese when teaching English in Japan. Some students may want a bi-lingual teacher for their private lessons, others won't. That info appears on your profile.
I haven't taught before, can I register? Yes you can. If you are are a native speaker of the language you intend teaching in Japan, or are fluent in that language and want to teach private students, then register with us. All areas of Japan, teaching all languages.
What do I do if I move? If you move house, apartment, city, town, prefecture or country, just log-in to change or delete your profile.
How many students can I get? How many do you want? Some teachers in Japan only want a couple of students to supplement their income, other teachers receive all their income from teaching private lessons in Japan.
Should I include a photo? We recommend that teachers send us a photo for inclusion with their profile. If you have a photo in JPG file format, please send it as an email attachment. Students prefer to see who will be teaching them, so profiles with a picture attract more interest.
Can you sponsor me? 121sensei.com cannot sponsor teachers in, or outside of Japan. We do offer a place for you to advertise your services to students looking for private lessons in Japan, teaching English or any language.
